Marathons
The 2006 London Marathon was on Sunday 23 April
Well, WE DID IT!
It loomed closer week-by-week … day-by-day … hour-by-hour … minute-by (oh do shut up! Ed). But it was well worth it. 4 months of training in cold; wet; dark; windy evenings around Harrow and Wembley, with bemused shoppers and people on their way home from work staring at us thinking, "they must be crazy out in shorts and a t-shirt in this weather!". But little did they know of the effort that was going into getting "THE ONE". The marathon of all marathons, the medal of all medals (don't start that again! Ed). And wow what a medal it is! But I don't just do these races for the medal (Uh hum…).
"Those poor runners, having to run in this drizzling cold rain this Sunday morning…" Oh do shut up Mister DJ…! WE LOVE THIS WEATHER! It was perfect running conditions — the drizzly rain kept us cool and hydrated and stopped us over heating… including the tempers! Ah bliss! It was just like January and february again… I daubed some sun cream on me just in case the sun DARED show it's face but it had 33598 runners looking up at it snarling "don't you even THINK about coming out today".
And the Spectators were great… fantastic… especially those Sudbury Court supporters at the 14 and 21 mile point! Missed them the first time round, but caught their radiant smiles the second time… should I slow down and stop to have a quick chat… I had seen other runners doing it. But my legs answered that question for me… "stop now matey, and you ain't gonna start again! They were the poor sufferers of the weather, but for the whole of the 26.2 miles our ears were filled with the sound of cheering and clapping. Who needs CarboGel when you have that to keep you going! (Although I did have 2 gels anyway…)
Possibly the most painful and yet the most exhilarating experience I have ever had. It took 4 months to arrive and was gone it what seemed like a flash!
Will I do it again…?
YOU BETCHA!
WELL DONE EVERYONE!
Andy
P.S. Photo attached to prove I did it!
